Halloween word scramble for adults

This Halloween word scramble is made for a grown-up party: 16 spooky words in large print, each with a one-line clue, running from a 4-letter warm-up to a 9-letter finish. Try five of them on screen now, then print the free PDF for the snack table. The answer key is the PDF's last page, and it's hidden at the foot of this page too.

5 of this page's 16 words, with their clues, shortest first. No sign-up, and speed never counts.

The round deals one word from each fifth of the list, so it starts easy and ends on one of the long ones. Tap the letter tiles in order to spell the word. Undo takes back the last letter, and Skip shows the word and moves on.

Print pages 1 and 2 for each guest and a single copy of page 3 for the host. Orange paper looks the part, but the big black letters are easiest to read on white.

Running it at a Halloween party

  • Have it waiting at the door. A stack of sheets and a cup of pencils gives early guests something to do while the costumes keep arriving.
  • Race, or don't. Set a kitchen timer for 10 minutes and see who gets the most words. Or skip the timer and let people finish at their own pace over a cup of cider.
  • Play in teams. Put two guests on one sheet, a pirate with a princess if the costumes allow. One reads the clues out loud and the other writes.
  • Give a small prize. A bag of candy corn or a mini pumpkin for the first sheet with every word right, checked against the answer page.
  • Hand out a hint. If a table is stuck, the host can give the first letter of the word, or a second clue of their own.

At church, at the club or with the grandkids

A fall get-together at church or a card club can run it as a five-minute opener: everyone takes a sheet, and the leader reads the answers aloud at the end. With grandkids, read the clues together and let them shout out the words. The free round works on a phone or tablet, with big letter tiles to tap.
