Word Groups: pick every word that fits the group

Word Groups names a group, such as Fruits or Musical instruments, and shows a handful of words. Some belong to the group and some don't. Tap every word that fits, then tap Done. A game has 4 groups.

Play a free round of Word Groups

Pick all the words that belong to a group. No sign-up, and speed never counts.

How to play

  1. Read the group at the top, such as "Pick all the holidays." The line under it tells you how many to find: "There are 3."
  2. Tap each word that belongs. A tapped word gets a small check mark. Tap it again to un-pick it.
  3. Tap Done. Each right pick gets a ✓, each pick from outside the group gets a ✗, and a group word you didn't tap says "Not picked." If anything was off, a line under the words names the group's words on that screen, such as "Holidays: Christmas, Diwali, Hanukkah."
  4. Take your time with the answers. They stay up until you tap Next group. After the fourth, tap See my score.

The words sit on large buttons. For bigger text still, turn on Extra-large text in the app's Account → Settings.

Word Groups at Level 2, group 1 of 4: Pick all the holidays, with Christmas and Diwali picked among Blouse, Spoon, Monkey, Heron and Hanukkah
Level 2, the level of the free round: 7 words, 3 of them holidays. Two are tapped so far. The one still to find is Hanukkah.

A sample group at Level 3

"Pick all the fruits. There are 4."

Mango · Carrot · Peach · Violin · Lemon · Spinach · Sofa · Grape

The fruits are Mango, Peach, Lemon and Grape. Violin and Sofa are easy to set aside. Carrot and Spinach are the catch: from Level 3, half or more of the wrong words come from a close neighbor of the group, so fruits share the screen with vegetables.

Holidays has 7 words; every other group has 10. Each game picks 4 different groups.

Words that fit two groups

Some words honestly fit more than one group. The game keeps a list of them, checked by hand, and never shows them as wrong answers for a group they fit:

  • A pepper is a fruit to a botanist, so Pepper is never a wrong word when you're picking fruits.
  • The ten birds on the Birds list, from robins to hawks, live in the wild. So do wild ducks, wild turkeys, wild boar, bighorn sheep, wild burros, mountain goats and wild horses. None of them is ever a wrong answer under Wild animals.
  • A chicken, a rooster, a duck, a turkey and an eagle are all birds, so they're never wrong answers under Birds.
  • There are kitchen cabinets, tables, chairs and stools, so Cabinet, Table, Chair and Stool are never wrong under Kitchen items.

The free round on this page is Level 2: 7 words and 3 to find, four times over.

How the score works

Each group is scored on its own. Every right pick counts as 1, every wrong pick takes off half, and the total is divided by the number of words that belong, out of 100. All 3 of 3 scores 100; 2 of 3 plus one wrong word scores 50. A group never scores below 0, and your game score is the average of the 4 groups.

There's no clock in Word Groups. Each group waits for you to tap Done, and its answers stay up until you tap Next group.

How it differs from other word grouping puzzles

The group is always named for you, and the screen tells you how many words belong. The puzzle is spotting which words fit, never guessing what the hidden link is. You see one group at a time, with its answers shown before you go on.

Questions about Word Groups

Which holidays are in the game?

Seven: Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Hanukkah, Passover and Diwali. Any of them can turn up when the group is Holidays.

Do I have to find every word?

No. Each right pick counts on its own: 2 of 3 with no wrong picks scores about 67 for that group. A wrong pick costs half as much as a right pick earns, so a careful guess can be worth making.

What does "Not picked" mean?

It marks a word that belongs to the group but that you didn't tap. It earns no point, and it costs nothing extra either.
